My Afro Hair Made Me Feel Insecure ft. Amelia Aulani

Natural hair, identity, and confidence are deeply connected and no one embodies that journey better than Amelia Aulani, a Caribbean Dominican-Jamaican creator from the UK who’s quickly becoming a trusted voice in the natural hair care space. From childhood insecurities to leading conversations online, Amelia is building a platform rooted in representation, education, and self-love.

From Insecure Teen to Natural Hair Advocate

Growing up in a predominantly white school, Amelia rarely saw girls with afro-textured hair like hers. She often felt insecure, didn’t know how to care for her curls, and believed straight hair would help her “fit in.”

Lockdown changed everything. With more time to focus on herself, Amelia began relearning her hair, healing her confidence, and eventually sharing her journey online.

Why She Creates: Representation Matters

Now posting consistently on TikTok and Instagram, Amelia uses her platform to show the beauty and versatility of afro hair…something she didn’t grow up seeing.

“If I could gain confidence I never thought I’d have, then I know other people can too.”

Through product reviews, routine breakdowns and honest stories, she helps many improve their hair health while improving their self-esteem.

Her Best Natural Hair Growth Advice

Amelia’s top takeaway for anyone struggling with their hair:

If you’re not seeing growth, it could have something to do with length retention.

She recommends focusing on:

  • Moisture + deep conditioning

  • A clean scalp (don’t skip shampoo)

  • Gentle detangling

  • Low heat

  • Protective styles

  • Regular oiling + hydration

Her go-to product: the Mielle Twisting Soufflé, especially for dry or dyed hair.

Academia, Identity & The Halo Code

Amelia’s sociology dissertation explored the link between Black hair and identity, including the impact of school and workplace discrimination. She highlights the importance of the Halo Code: a campaign fighting for hair-inclusive environments.

What She’s Doing Now

After graduating, Amelia is pursuing media roles while continuing her digital content.
And excitingly…

🎙 She has launched her own radio show: “Curl Talk”

On Curl Talk, Amelia dives deeper into topics like:

  • natural hair care

  • identity & representation

  • Black beauty standards

  • confidence building

  • Gen Z experiences

It’s an extension of everything she stands for: education, empowerment, and community.
